World War II Essay Test

The following is a test written by myself for my students in my years of teaching high school. It is provided for free use to teachers and students or anyone interested in history.

Name:

Directions: Answer the following questions in complete paragraphs and sentences. There are only 5 questions on this test so they count 20 points each and I expect well thought out answers. In other words this test is nothing but 5 essays. You will need to either type your answers out or write them out neatly on a separate sheet of paper.

Pick any 5 of the following 7 essays to answer

1. The Treaty of Versailles was a failure on many levels. In an essay explain the failures of the Treaty of Versailles and how these failures led to the rise of fascism and eventually World War II.

2. After World War 1 the United States took a policy of neutrality. Explain why America wanted to stay neutral, its feelings towards WW1 including the government investigation, the laws that were passed to remain neutral, and the steps Roosevelt took to end the neutrality.

3. Describe the rise of Hitler from his beginnings until the peak of his power with the fall of France. Describe how he became the leader of Germany, the Empire he wished to create, the areas that he took over as Furor, and the tactics that he used to take these countries and hold the rest of Europe at bay.

4. Describe the Allied offensive in the European theatre including the generals, the strategies, the German and Italian Response and counterattacks, specific battles, and the outcomes.

5. Describe the Pacific Campaign including generals, strategies, enemy counterattacks, specific battles, and the outcome.

6. Describe in detail the actions that were taken by the Nazi’s to first expel and then commit genocide on the Jewish people. Cover the Holocaust completely from the original restrictions in Germany to the Final Solution and the liberation of the camps.

7. Describe the final actions that were taken to end the Pacific campaign, as well as the peace treaties that were signed in both the European and Pacific Theatres. Given you understanding of current history, do you think that the two treaties were more or less effective then the Treaty of Versailles?
