World War 2 Subject Quiz

Reasons for the War

The Beginning of the War

Assassination: The crown prince of Austria, Arch-Duke Ferdinand was ______________ in Serbia. Austria made demands Serbia could not meet thus starting a war. _______________ brought all the other countries into the fight.
________________: German plan to go through Belgium, quickly defeat France, and then concentrate their forces on Russia before Russia could mobilize their forces (Russia is huge and spread out)
________________: The Allies stopped the German advance at the Marne River in France in September 1914, and trenches were dug by both sides. Horrific battles were fought over small areas of land. For instance the First Battle of the Somme was fought over 7 miles of ground and cost 1.2 million lives.

Naval Warfare

British Blockade: Great Britain blockaded __________ to prevent weapons and other supplies from getting to the German war effort. The effort also blocked food and 750,000 Germans died of starvation.
German U-boats: ______________, could get past the blockade and sink ships bringing supplies to the Allies. U-boats could not follow conventional rules of warfare and provide warning before sinking a ship, so many more lives were lost. This angered Americans. At first Germany promised to not sink passenger ships after it appeared the United States would enter the war, however they soon broke this promise.

America goes to war

•Lusitania: British ship sunk by German U-boats, _____ US deaths.

____________________: Intercepted by British Intelligence. Sent from the German foreign minister to the German ambassador. Requested an alliance with Mexico to keep the United States out of the War in Europe. Stated that __________ would support Mexico in regaining Texas, New Mexico, and ________________ in return.
More submarine warfare: 4 unarmed American ships were sunk killing 36.
___________________: Overthrew the Czar and created a republic in Russia. The war was now between Republics (Allies) and monarchies (Central Powers.)
Woodrow Wilson declared war on April 2, 1917.

American mobilization

__________________: At the time America only had a military of 200,000. Act was implemented to allow a draft. All men had to register to be part of the draft. 24 million registered, 3 million were drafted, ___________ of those ended up in Europe and around 1.5 million saw combat. Most were not high school grads and 1/5 was foreign born.
_________________: America also didn’t have weapons, ships, etc. Shipyard workers were exempted from the draft and fabrication was used to mass produce ships so efficiently that on July 4, 1918 the U.S. launched 95 ships in one day.
_______________: German U-Boats were extremely effective at sinking Allied ships. Convoy system protected cargo ships with several destroyers to prevent their sinking. Allies also laid a 230 mile barrier of mines to bottle the Germans into the North Sea. Because of this only 637 American troops died due to u-boats.


New Weapons of War

Tanks: Made of steel with treads that could cross most terrains and withstand bullets. Mainly used by the British to level barbed wire in no mans land to clear a path for __________.
Planes: First used for scouting then bombing. At first pilots shot at one another with pistols then machine guns were added. Germans invented an _________________ to prevent the bullets from hitting the propeller.
_____________: 600 rounds per minute could decimate whole lines of enemy troops. Large artillery could mob targets from 75 miles away.
Poison Gas: Chlorine Gas burned out the lungs, ____________, and burned troops. It was heavier then air so it sank down into trenches and stayed there.

Hazards of War

Extremely poor sanitary conditions: lice, ________________, poison gas, rats, polluted water, etc.
________________: complete emotional collapse from the horrors of war that many never recovered from.
Trench foot: From standing in wet trenches without changing socks: causes the toes to turn red, then blue, then ______. Only solution was amputation, sometimes of the entire foot.
__________________: Disease of the gums and throat that was also common in soldiers.
Dysentery: From polluted drinking water

Closing Days of the War
In 1917 the Russians pulled out of the War (________________________, Lennon sent to Russia on purpose to cause it). The Germans concentrated all their forces against their Western Front. They came within 50 miles of Paris before American reinforcements came and stopped the advance. From that point on the fresh American troops helped to stop German advancements and mount offensives.
_________________, previously a conscientious objector, killed 25 Germans with only a rifle and revolver, then with the help of 6 other Americans captured 132 prisoners. Was promoted to sergeant and became a celebrity.
On November 3, 1918 Austria Hungary __________________. On November 9th, 1918 a republic was set up in Germany and the Kaiser gave up the throne. On 11/11/1918 at 11:00 pm Germany agreed to an armistice.
In the end the war cost 22 million lives half civilian, ______________________, 10 million refuges, and $338 billion dollars. America lost 48,000 men in battle, 62,000 to disease, and 200,000 were wounded.
