Taxes and Economics Study Guide
The following is a test written by myself for my students in my years of teaching high school. It is provided for free use to teachers and students or anyone interested in history. Where Taxes Go _____________________: society security, social welfare, health-care, etc. Almost half of every tax dollar goes to this. ______________________: The armed forces, about 20 percent goes to this. _______________________: Federal loans for road programs, public housing, police, etc. Managing the Economy ________________: Using taxation and government spending to influence the economy. The government can do various things such as spending money to stimulate the economy, reduce taxes, or other methods. However this can lead to a deficit. _________________(GNP): The sum of all goods and services produced by American products in a year. The national debt has gone from 40 billion during WW2 to over 8 trillion today. __________________: Controlling the supply of money and credit to influence the economy. The Federal Reserve System The Central Banking system of the United States. Divided into _______________________. Each district has one main Federal Reserve Bank and several branches. Most large banks, about 5000 of 12000, are part of the system. The Federal Reserve is controlled by a _______________ board of governors. They set the discount rate, or the rate at which banks can borrow money, either encouraging or discouraging loans. Second they can change the requirements of how much money each bank must keep in reserve. Finally, they can buy ___________________________ in the open market to put money into the economy. United States Foreign Policy Foreign Policy is the strategy and policy of the United States in their dealings with other nations. It is made up of the following components: ____________________: Keeping the US free and independent. ____________________: Settling disputes and helping other governments to obtain peace to keep the US out of war. ____________________: Democratic governments don’t go to war usually with one another. ____________________: Free trade is good for the economy. ____________________: Helping others in need such as after a natural disaster, providing aid for them and keeping their governments stable. Foreign Policy over time _______________: At first the US was weak and deeply in debt, they stayed out of World affairs as much as possible. _______________: The United States would prevent Europe from taking colonies in the Americas or influencing the governments that were there. _______________: The US became expansionist and a military power looking for new markets. They took Hawaii, Alaska, the Philippines, etc. _______________: The US played a minor role in WW1 and a major role in WW2. _______________: The United States vs. the Soviet Union _______________: Keep communism from spreading in any part of the world. Foreign Policy cont. _______________: Keep a military advantage over the Soviet Union, large buildup of nuclear arms. This led to agreements to limit the numbers of nukes between the 2 countries. _______________: Relaxation of tensions between the US and communist nations, put in place by Nixon. _______________: Regan put more pressure on the Soviet Union.
