Ronald Reagan Gave an Amazing Speech in 1961 on Socialized Medicine By John Daniels of Simply Conservative I was browsing youtube and I found an amazing speech given by Ronald Reagan in 1961. During that period the legislation that would eventually become Medicare was being considered in Congress. It was eventually passed in 1965 and is now unfunded to the tune of 30 trillion dollars. Reagan did a talk as part of a campaign by the American Medical Association called Operation Coffee Cup. In it he lays out why socialized medicine will not work and why the legislation then in Congress was just the first step towards the nationalization of the health care industry. Essentially, similar legislation that openly called for socialized medicine had been soundly defeated previously. So, the new tactic was to play off of the emotions of the people by saying if they didn't support what would become Medicare they were denying health care to the elderly and disabled. It was just the first step in ending private practice health care in the United States and today we are to the point that full nationalization is being considered. The link is below.
